Hay girl hay?

Denmark decided their neighbors were having too much fun and wanted to get in on the indie pop action. Meet Girlfriends, a trio with an ear for retro and an eye for pastel. Their single, “Nowhere Near Your Heart” wonderfully samples New Order and offers something a little rougher around the edges than what we normally hear from their Swedish counterparts.

If they keep this up their band name may become a self fulfilling prophecy. Check out more stuff on their SoundCloud page or download it all for free from this link.

All Black Everything

If there’s one thing Sweden is great at, it’s producing pop music. While their plethora of majestic electro pop music the most attention, there are a few “indie” standouts (Jens Lenkan, anyone?). The Concept are the latest bunch of handsome-as-all-hell Swedes to hit the market with “D-D-Dance” and “Gimme Twice” that puts them somewhere in the realm of Phoenix and Two Door Cinema Club.

The truth is that you could tell someone these tracks came from either of those bands and they probably wouldn’t question you. As The Wounded Jukebox points out, this can be something of an insult to a band, but in The Concept’s case it’s a sign that they’re doing it right. Be prepared for some catchy indie pop coming your way from them over the next year.

I'd like to think this is how they do Christmas in Sweden

Maybe Christmas isn’t a non-stop fun fest for you. Maybe you like your holidays a little darker, edgier. The good thing is you don’t have to be a Scrooge or a Grinch to enjoy The Knife getting in to the Christmas spirit with “Christmas Reindeer.” The holidays are usually the time for more traditional, contemporary or folk acts to bust out with the seasonal song, so it’s great to hear an electro pop act chime in.

Don’t expect ringing bells and lots of cheer, this is as moody as you can get!

How is this not a marketing ploy?

Two gorgeous Swedish DJs make house pop that’s as irresistible as they are – could it be a Lana Del Rey-style trap? No way, this is just what the Swedes do. Though they are yet another pop duo to emerge from Sweden, the sound is just as fresh as anything we’ve heard before. They’re way more house than their Icona Pop counterparts and a lot less dark.

Rebecca & Fiona already have a massive following in Sweden and are looking to break into the American market in 2012. My guess is they have a good fighting chance if they keep this up.

Always living for the night

Swedish pop duo (most used description on EPM) Icona Pop have been raising big expectations this year after Chiddy Bang vaulted them into the spotlight and the recently released Nights Like This EP showcased their potential. They’re masters of the catchy hook and can belt out a chorus like no other.

I love blogging about them, a lot, and I couldn’t help myself from doing it again – using a music video as an excuse. Icona Pop pays homage to Tarantino’s Death Proof on the video for “Nights Like This,” trading glow paint for plaid and yet still managing to look European as all hell.
