As far as break up songs go, you can’t limit yourself to endlessly depressing sappy songs. “Everybody Hurts” is really only good for a day until it starts to chip away at your soul. That’s where RDGLDGRN‘s “I Love Lamp” comes in – enough anguish to satisfy your desire to feel miserable but with an aggressively independent message and uptempo beat to keep that chin up, kiddo!

Message aside, I’m absolutely delighted by the music of this Virginia trio who seems to perfectly marry indie pop rock and the playful soul of hip hop. There’s not a whole lot of info out about them other than this shiz is new and there is an EP on the way. RDGLDGRN. Keep an eye out!

[After a short recess due to vacation, Electric Panda Music is back and resuming posts. Thanks for reading and listening!]

Oh, as if you’re surprised

2011 might be known as the year of fascination with weird rappers, but don’t forget that R&B has been making a comeback on the “underground” scene. With Frank Ocean and The Weeknd leading the way, R&B has entered an experimental phase that’s catching on with listeners. Chicago based producer No ID has entered the fray with his production project Cocaine 80s – featuring a handful of collaborating vocalists (including Common).

The 7-song The Pursuit EP (which is free, btw) isn’t all R&B goodness, “Summer Madness” and “Anywhere But Here” are straight-up hip hop, but there are some dangerously soulful jams to be had. Today’s track “To Tell You The Truth” is a stand-out example. Cheers to more productions like this, let’s hope we see more as the year goes on.

When Anna Calvi first came across my speakers I thought the Velvet Underground had fused with European soul and a hot stick of pure sensual fire. Much to my surprise, Calvi just barely released her debut album last Monday, earning accolades from NME as “perhaps the first great album of 2011.” I couldn’t agree more, they don’t make music like this anymore.

Smoky, seductive and dangerous – could she be the real femme fatale? Well educated in classical music, Calvi writes her own music, fingers dancing on a six string that lay a substantial foundation down on which her vocals soar. If you’re looking for something rivetingly baroque and powerful, this one’s for you.
