“I can’t believe we jam as hard as we do”

This is one of those rare occasions where I’m at a loss for words. Came across this quartet from Liverpool today and was immediately addicted to “Ill Fit,” a jam off an upcoming album to be released next year. Can’t think of another time where a song about a relationship mismatch sounded so sexy. They come from rival cities, but maybe Wave Machines was working from The Smiths’ playbook of lyrical and rhythmic dichotomy. Either way, this is some freshy freshness – as if we didn’t have enough to look forward to in October already. The single “Ill Fit” officially drops October 22nd.

Elbows up, side to side

This rarely, if ever, happens on Electric Panda Music – but I’ve posted a dubstep song (oh em gee). And even then, you can only categorize “Talkbox Intended” as dubstep on a technicality. If anything, this is pure, modern funk. All I want to say about Gramatik‘s latest (free download) is that it had me dancing in my chair at work even through the 5th listen on repeat.

Now put your mother fuckin’ hands up.

Shawn Christopher doing his best Childish Gambino impersonation

Inglewood’s own Shawn Chrystopher has been building his profile for the last few years as one of the West Coast’s more promising talents. Not a YouTube phenom, Chrystopher has built a great collection of solid records to support his bid for stardom. He’s faced criticism for not having a stronger individual identity, but I think there’s a lot of strength in his ability to switch gears and tackle different styles.

“One Of My Homies” is the first single off his fourth album, My Name Is Shawn, due out in July. The record finds Chrystopher fully embracing his South Central roots with a fat 90s drum beat and funk nasty synth smoothing out the chorus. He doesn’t have the voice of his old guard counterparts, but his new school delivery fits in seamlessly with the old school beats like a rising sun on the Los Angeles horizon.

The last people you want your daughter to meet

CMJ 2011 has officially kicked off with over 1,200 artists set to take over New York City this week. Electric Panda Music featured artist My Pet Dragon is playing a showcase this Saturday at Mercury Lounge along with today’s artist – Fresh Millions. Where My Pet Dragon leans toward the spiritual, these guys make up for it in pure sleaze.

In some ways, Fresh Millions’ “Control Freak” reminds me of my favorite song of 2010, Staygold’s “Backseat”, in that it’s funked up to the max and covered in references to casual sex. Is there a better way to spend your Saturday night?

"I'm just into electropop for the Williamsburg chicks"

If you follow blogs like mine you’re probably aware of the genre-melting awesomeness that is Theophilus London but if you don’t – here’s your heads up. Hard to nail down what exactly the Brooklyn-based London is doing with his music – at a very basic level it’s like if Prince got all punk and rock on our asses, with a few more ingredients thrown in. Not just great in the studio, Theophilus London puts on extremely energetic, dazzling live shows – witness the magic personally at Music Hall of Williamsburg with the up-and-coming Gordon Voidwell as the opener.

Today’s track is off of his upcoming debut full-length Timez Are Weird These Days, a strange western-esque funk pop rock (jesus why am I even trying at this point) jam. The point is, London is like a music chef – effortlessly blending these elements into something for everyone. Finally having the backing of a major record label, get ready for a hit on July 19th.
