Someone didn’t hear about that whole No Doubt thing

Young Wonder is an electronic duo from Ireland who might instantly draw comparisons to Purity Ring. While they already have an interesting collection of productions under their belt through 2012′s eponymous release, with “Time” it sounds like they’ve hit their songwriting stride. Guest vocals from fellow Irish producer Sacred Animals provide a settling balance to Rachel Koeman’s sharp cries before giving way to lush synth patterns and pleasantly surprising delays.

There’s always that beautiful moment when experimental production stops becoming experimental and a gorgeous product emerges from the lab work. This is one of those moments.

Bastille

Never judge an artist by his haircut

Bastille may be the best band you’ve never heard about. Simply put, they produce incredible cover songs. Nothing is out their wheelhouse as they tackle artists like Seal, Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Fleetwood Mac and more with a dark, electro atmosphere and the occasional movie dialogue sample. While some of the source material could be considered kitschy, the moody makeover they’re given comes across as rich, dark and powerful. Even the occasional flavors of dubstep thrown in are surprisingly welcome.

I’d posted about their City High cover back in 2011, a few months before signing to Virgin Records, but had fallen off my radar. While it may have been a one-off for us at the time, a year later they’ve grown a serious following in their native UK and amassed a treasure trove of cover songs on their Other People’s Heartache mixtapes. It should be noted that they do have a small handful of good original tracks to their name, but they are at their best with this approach. If you like the cover of TLC’s “No Scrubs” posted here, you owe it to yourself to listen to it all.

Are you ready for a brand new electro-pop darling? Copenhagen’s Karen Marie Ørsted (MØ) killed it with the release of “Pilgrim“ last October and followed suit with “Glass,” a space voyage of light drums and cascading synths. Aside from giving us a new reason to use the [Alt] function on our macs, MØ gets extra credit for including the line “turn the lights off so our horny souls can get some private time.” I mean, really. It just doesn’t get better.

While her distribution currently remains through Sony Music Denmark, word on the street is that Neon Gold is cooking up a 7″ in the near future. Stay tuned.

newtimers

Everything’s cooler in Sweden

My love of Swedish pop music is well documented on this site, but it seems like it’s been a minute since we’ve heard from the magical land of unicorns and rainbows. Newtimers are brand new to the scene (ahhh I see what they did there) and are starting to crank out some cheesy, 80s inspired electro pop. This might be a little late to the party for any kind of breakout success, but you won’t hear me complaining. “She’s a Gun” is way too much fun to ignore.

Dig on Newtimers’ SoundCloud to hear the rest of their EGO EP.

So yeah, let's do NYE here

So yeah, let’s do NYE here

With Christmas behind us, it’s time to look forward to the real party! SnowGlobe Music Festival will be kicking off in Tahoe this Saturday and continuing through New Years Eve with a closing set from Chromeo. It’s a nice blend of traditional DJs, dubstep artists and electro pop acts set in an extremely unique location. I’ve never done a music festival in the snow so this one should be interesting.

I’ll be at the festival covering it with the FrequenScene crew, but thought I’d use the blog to call out some of the most exciting acts to look forward to. You know all the big names (Deadmau5, Wiz Khalifa, Chromeo) but there’s a treasure trove of artists to be excited about. Here are a few highlights, in no particular order:

Cherub

Delicious Prince-esque electro pop reflecting on life, relationships and drugs. They’ll take the stage on Sunday.

St. Lucia

An Electric Panda Music all-time favorite with a high likelihood of a breakout year in 2013. It’ll be hard to decide between them or Cherub when they play Sunday.

Popeska

I don’t know a whole lot about Popeska, but I know this song BEGS to be heard live. Sunday at the Sierra Tent.

Robert DeLong

Had a chance to interview this guy for FrequenScene. Not just a DJ, DeLong incorporates a ton of crazy shit into his live shows, including Wii-Motes. See him do his thing on Sunday.

Lynx

A local Bay Area musician, Lynx takes the stage on Saturday (and also makes a guest appearance in the FrequenScene interview with Beats Antique).

Poolside

Chilled out, sunny beats to kick Monday of the festival off right

For a complete SnowGlobe lineup check out their website, or subscribe to my Spotify playlist featuring all of the acts. I’ll be doing live coverage of the festival from my personal Twitter account and on the FrequenScene website. Hope to see you there!
