Star Slinger chops up Life Without Buildings on “May I Walk With You?”

Star Slinger digging for gold

Talent or originality is never a guarantee that a band is going to stick around. Sometimes they just drift into the music sphere, leave their message and move on as quickly as they came. The good part is that music, for the most part, lives forever. Life Without Buildings is a critically acclaimed band that were together for a short while (3 years), dropped an awesome LP, and then called it quits. They exist as part of my collective fascination with a lot of music coming out of Glasgow, a more substantial love of regionally specific artists than my love affair with Sweden.

UK beat master Star Slinger dropped “May I Walk With You?” in the fall of 2010 that heavily samples the lyrics from Life Without Building’s breakout hit “The Leanover.” Chopping up what is already a twerky jerky delivery and covering it in groovy synth-hop to make a delicious musical meat loaf of awesome. From what I’ve read, no one has given props to the origin of the lyric samples and wanted to make sure Life Without Buildings got their due credit.

Nice way to crap on a great song. Just because the technology exists doesn’t mean you have to use it.

Normally I’d agree with you 100%, but I think Star Slinger did the song justice – there was nothing wildly different from the original. Having listened to a lot of his stuff, I honestly believe this was more of an ode to Life Without Buildings, rather than just using them.

Now, if you want to talk about all of the dubstep remixes of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” …. bleeeecccchhhhh
