French singer/songwriter Soko is doing her best Jay-Z impersonation and coming out of retirement for a new album due out next Spring (at least that’s the rumor on the street). She’s delightfully pouty, lustful and innocent all the same. After teasing a return with a Nouvelle Vague collaboration last year, her new material is a little more introspective and dark versus the playful “I’ll Kill Her” that jump started her cult fan base.
It could be easy to write off her act as a little gimmicky… it’s more of a method of delivering spoken word poetry than any classical notion of “singing” but the work is haunting. Where “I’ll Kill Her” was fun and cheeky, “Just Want To Make It New With You” lives more below the surface – and a track I haven’t been able to get out of my mind since first hearing it. She may not have the swagger of Hova but the new track is earning plenty of repeat plays!
