Neon Hitch – “Gucci Gucci (Kreayshawn Cover)”

Obviously a non-basic bitch

A couple days ago the Gypsy songstress, Neon Hitch, released yet another hip-hop cover song – this time taking aim at the infamous Kreayshawn (I’m so sorry for calling it hip-hop). It’s what you might expect: stripped-down and sexed-up with that ever-enticing cutesy British accent of hers. I do think it’s hilarious that pretty much every other version besides the original is actually a pleasant song to listen to.

At this juncture I’d like to call out the “wish we were as relevant as Popjustice” music blog Popdust, who recently included this cover as their opening salvo in an article against the Insane Clown Posse. They write:

By covering “Gucci Gucci,” Neon hitches her way into this debate and its timeliness. The song is irrelevant; it’s less a piece of music than a press release that makes noise. It exists to tell you it exists.

Disregarding local news-grade pun, it’s an obtuse perspective considering that Kreayshawn herself is a testament to “existence for the sake of existence,” offering no other contribution to culture or reality other than “this is the kind of shit they do in Oakland and this is why we do not go to Oakland.” While Kreayshawn is insufferable and annoying, Neon Hitch takes the elements of the song which might otherwise be genuine and moves it into a light away from the demon ogre casting a dark shadow over the content.

That is to say, it’s a fun song! Kreayshawn pokes at the high-end designer wear aficionados only to replace it with her own aggravating sense of identity. It’s something that appeals to a small segment of society- namely 14 year old girls with bad attitudes looking for something to justify their poor direction in life. Neon Hitch, on the other hand, puts the song in the light it should have been in the first place – non-exclusive, entertaining, where everyone is in on the joke.

The idea that Kreayshawn is a sincere, genuine cultural force while simply declaring a more enjoyable, tongue-in-cheek version as “bad” is so unbelievably laughable I might expect it coming from my 14-year-old cousin right after hilariously trying to explain how Skrillex is a musical genius. In any case, you don’t have to take my word for it. MP3 and video are posted below for your enjoyment.
