In a bit of a rush to post this and I fear it may not do Kimbra the justice she truly deserves. However, the music should speak for itself. Kimbra is an up-and-coming pop star adding relevance to the suddenly growing Australian music scene. After appearances with Gotye (my song of the year so far) and Miami Horror, Kimbra’s out with a full length album, Vows, that easily lives up to the hype – or at least my personal expectations. It’s a roller coaster of silky smooth upbeat pop jams like “Cameo Lover” and smoky, soulful ballads like “Old Flame.”
As a complete artist, there is very little that Kimbra lacks. An adorable, Zooey Deschanel-like attractiveness, bubbly-yet-earnest personality and plenty of range in both voice and sound. She doesn’t fall into any cookie cutter category, with only loose comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Nina Simone to be made. And unlike most pop music focused on singles, Kimbra delivers a complete album experience on Vows.
With solid efforts from Gotye and Kimbra, plus this Willy Moon guy that’s been buzzing, the Australian music scene is one to keep an eye on and may be seeing more of the spotlight come 2012. I’d highly encourage you to pick up Vows and get acquainted with this sound.
