Thanks to Prefix, last night I checked out the Dom show at Bowery Ballroom and was treated to yet another “don’t forget to catch the opening bands” experience. Brooklyn-based Friends Dom-inated (see what I did there?) the stage with an energetic, cutesy pop performance. The kind I expected from the Cults show but didn’t get.
You can call them a less aggressive Sleigh Bells or a heavier version of Cults, with layers of Afro-Pop drum beats to set the distinction. Their first single “Friend Crush” is a strong debut for this group, who have a lot of potential for success and the ability to set themselves apart from similar indie pop acts. Disjointed, tropical instrumentals coupled with the lyrics that no guy ever wants to hear are a great way to usher in the warm weather.
They’ll be opening for Peelander-Z on May 7th at Webster Hall.

Why don’t I remember this band… oh, because I was (unfortunately) asleep while standing. Dangit. Also, opening for Peelander-Z, weren’t you just saying how much you want to see them!?

Nickie- watched a few minutes of a live performance of Mad Tiger… I don’t know if I could handle a whole show, but maybe I just need to experience it to understand.
