Flashback Friday: Saint Etienne – “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”

Being a good blogger/music critic isn’t just about knowing what the new hot band is – but a rich understanding of music history as well. I’ve listened to an assload of music in my day, but there’s so much out there it’s impossible have heard it all. Thus, Flashback Friday is dedicated to the pursuit of historical music exploration as I share my new (old) favorites with all of ya’ll. What gets me most is how a lot of these older bands’ music could pass as something we’d hear on the indie scene today.

Saint Etienne is one of those bands that I hear for the first time and think “how the hell did I miss this?” Their standout album Foxbase Alpha dropped in 1993 that served as an ode to retro pop sensibilities and pioneering a new jingly London dance sound. One classic to come out of this great record was “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” – energetic and pleasant with every drop.
