Oh, you….
Well folks, I don’t want to get too long winded on this one. There are few things more exciting than when one of your favorite artists remixes another, scaled infinitely when it turns out absolutely perfect. Chrvches remixing MS MR, to me, falls under that categorization. And if either artist is one you haven’t heard yet, this is surely your vehicle to doing so.
HOT DAMN THIS REMIX IS AMAZING. Just had to get that out of my system.
Moody as you wanna be
So, I have this tremendous Spotify playlist going called Waveforms and Galactic Unicorn Dust featuring all the best experimental electronica artists like Nosaj Thing, Gold Panda, Shlohmo, etc and let me just say it’s an utter shame that Vienna-based producer Sohn isn’t on the platform yet to be included on that list. Little is known about this guy (as is often the case) but his delicately textured production and fitting vocals make for extremely pleasant listening. “The Wheel” is a breakout waiting to happen, not to mention he does a phenomenal remix of the Banks song I posted a few weeks back.
We probably should have seen this coming
Contrary to conventional wisdom, “timeless” and “classic” are not necessarily synonyms. Classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd were brilliant in their time, but the music has to be appreciated in the context from whence it came. In arguably one of the best defenses of pop music as a genre with integrity, the recent collaboration between Elton John and Pnau prove that pop songwriting can transcend classic status into the extremely elusive category of timeless. The Rocket Man blasted off into the future after giving the Australian dance duo his blessing and support to rework a small selection of his more obscure 70s hits on Good Morning To The Night – the standout being “Phoenix,” an electronic revisitation of “Grey Seal.”
You’d almost think the songwriting was meant for this kind of presentation. It fits perfectly, like the best RAC remix you’ve ever heard, and almost makes you wonder if decades ago Elton John knew things were heading this way. And don’t even act like his fashion sense wasn’t a foreshadowing of the yet-to-be realized electro pop scene. In this feature on the Guardian, John sounds like a 20-something blogger plugging his favorite new bands among his friends. Consider that this comes from a man who has been performing since the late 60s and it becomes clear that he isn’t just a classic, because he never really went away.
The least Mormon-y pic of Kaskade I could find online
Shoutout to all my Utah peeps in the house, Kaskade the Mormon DJ is finally getting some love on Electric Panda Music. That fact that he’s LDS has absolutely nothing to do with the music, but having lived in Salt Lake I find it pretty amusing. Doesn’t it seem like the life of an internationally renowned DJ is wasted on a Mormon? No booze, no sex, no drugs. Maybe he has a stunt double, who knows.
The fact of the matter is that I’m in love with this Mistermike remix of Kaskade’s “Eyes.” White Folks Get Crunk calls it “emo step” which I personally think does the track a disservice. It reminds me a lot of that spaced-out Swedish biznass you get from Futurecop! In any case, the real judge is you – so give it a listen and let me know what you think (and/or express your indignity about my comments on Mormonism).

Spoek Mathambo is part of a new generation of African musicians bridging the gap between modern dance and traditional African rhythms. If you’re familiar with traditional African music, you’ll understand what this means – drum-heavy dance music guaranteed to result in major ass-shaking. And that’s exactly what’s happening here.
Fellow musicians Adam Tensta and Kinship have throw their hat in the ring with a remix of Mathambo’s debut single, “Mshini Wam.” If there is better music to usher in a party-fueled Friday night in the city, I don’t know what it is.
